Liability is legal responsibility — the obligation to do something or pay something because the law or a contract requires it. Civil liability usually leads to damages or an order to perform an act. In some cases a court splits the trial into a liability phase (did the defendant do wrong?) and a quantum phase (how much must they pay?).
